Quickest way to get info on them?
For the above ones which have previously been kayaked:

Google maps.
Type in the name of the river
Follow the river right up to its beginnings/as high up as the road goes.
Right click; 'Whats here?'. This should give you the lat and long.
Where is the nearest town?
Go to a suitable 'get out' (source to sea??)
Same again. Where is the nearest town?
Type in Sri Lankan Hospitals, locate which are around. They seem to be banded across the middle of the country.
Then zoom in on the area! And do the same*
*make sure you do this - otherwise it will jsut give you the biggest hospital in the area. The smaller ones given may be hospitals, or may be medical centres. Eitherway it will keep the board happy.

For rivers that haven't been kayaked?
Do the same, but there is a 'List of Rivers' on Wikipedia. Grab a couple of the bigger ones from here? Or some of them that are around the South West which is where we think we may be boating. Is this wat we think so far?? Round the South West?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwestern_Sri_Lanka_rivers_and_streams
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rivers_of_Northern_Province,_Sri_Lanka

This may come in useful at some point?

Not sure if this has been seen or this guy has been contacted. Thought I would put it up as it might be one worth adding. Can contact him and ask for further notes on it and recommendations if he hasn't been already been asked.

So, I don't want to brag about First Descents, as I think there are people which claim 100+ First Descents...so I better shut up and go out...and do one again...there are still some out there...and as I hear, more new ones coming (Greenland)....oh yes...forgot...there was the Niruwal Eliya River in Sri Lanka too (which is quality)

From here:
Rafting in Sri LankaRafting is based in the hill country and the best rivers descend from Adam’s Peak, a 2,243m mountain which is the mythological place where Adam set foot on earth. Rafting options range from a one-hour ride in the Kelani River at Kitulgala, an ideal spot for beginners, to the “experienced paddlers only” rivers of Kotmale, Mahaweli and Kalu Ganga. Rafting mixes the ups and downs of rapids with calm sections perfect for looking at the tea and rubber plantations or mountains covered in jungle rainforest. In one section all you can hear is the pounding water rushing through the rapids and the cry of the guide’s instructions. In the next only the chirping birds break the silence. Around the next corner village women do their washing and giggle when you jump out of the raft to cool off. It’s easy to lose yourself in thought at the remoteness of the river and the community. But the next set of rapids quickly concentrate them as, helmet and paddle at the ready, you are pushed through the section in a whir of excitement. Look back to see what you’ve accomplished but be careful: the jungle views may sweep you away.

Kalu Ganga: This two-day trip with grade four and five rapids is only for experienced paddlers. The river spills out of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, tumbling its way down a 20km gorge. Day one offers paddling through thick jungle and a river campout while day two is full of rapids, dips and drops.

Kelani River: A perfect place to get your paddle wet for the first time, Kitulgala offers a one-hour rafting trip with challenging rapids, spectacular scenery and a tasty end-of-paddle meal. The rib cage rapids, grade three rated, are the section's toughest and they do get the pulse racing but children as young as six have conquered them with their parents. On the way down you pass locals swimming, their rafts piled high with sand, and the site of the railway in the 1957 movie Bridge Over the River Kwai. Behind you, mountains are covered in a mixture of thick rainforest and tea and rubber plantations. The river here, about two-and-a-half hours from Colombo, is good in most conditions but a dam controls the flow and it is closed off on Sundays. During the week is the best time to paddle. Red Dot can advise on the best specialist rafting companies and has attractive accommodation rates at a small selection of river hotels.

Kotmale River: The Kotmale River takes the thrill level up another notch again. The starting point is about three hours from Colombo and the six-hour journey includes steep grade five rapids. Previous rafting experience is essential.

Mahaweli River: Sri Lanka's biggest river offers a variety of challenges ranging from easy grade two sections to hair-raising grade six drops. This is a trip for experienced paddlers only. Dams control the flow of this river, which starts in the hills and runs to the east.

Sitawaka River: The Sitawaka River is in the neighbouring valley to Kitulgala and offers the next step up in challenge and excitement. Increasing to rapid grades four and five, depending of the rate of the river, this tour starts in peak wilderness with a swing bridge jump of seven metres. The middle section is fine for families to float along without experiencing the rapids but the lower section has grade three and four sections. Only 90 minutes from Colombo, this trip is a great adventure day out.

Sudu River: 'Sudu' meaning white river has a four-hour paddle with grade two and three rapids. Combine watching the activity of the numerous river communities with the usual rafting thrills.

Walawe Ganga: A grade two river with the benefit of watching for large herds of elephants in the Uda Walawe National Park, this trip offers fun and wildlife. The journey ends near Ambalantota on the south coast.

From here: http://www.lankalibrary.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=212
(if the river has a 10m & 12m waterfall, it could have other smaller ones?
Need to find where it is. (do this later in the planning stages)
Maduwanwela Doovili, a 25m fall is a creation of a branch of Adaluwa ganga, called the Arapora ganga, beginning from Sinharaja. The fall is located in its precincts at Ratnapura District in the Kolonna Electorate. There is a two-stream fall located above. But the main is the Maduwanwela Falls. The two other minor falls located below measures 10m & 12m respectively. The minor fall called Aralu Falls is situated below the Dooli Falls. According to a villager, the name epitomizes the water flower created by a rock situated at its midst. It cascades in a misty spray.

A conduit above the fall supplies water to Chandrika Wewa via Panamura Irrigation Network. To get to the fall travel from Embilipitiya along Kolonna road, which is in front of the Maduwanwela Walauwa. Another route is the Kolonna Road, running from Ratanapura across Madampe over Rakwana-Suriyakanda towards Maduwanwela where the fall is situated.

Tom & Will:
Here are a few of the databases that have waterfalls on.
Wade also suggested this approach.
We're not necessarily looking at paddling the waterfalls, just finding out which ones are in decent terrain with a decent amount of water in.
Some of them may possibly have potential to run too.
Hathmale Falls ; Bakers Falls ; Bopath Falls ; Ramboda ; Kudaduvhinda
(Maybe - I just wrote down a group of waterfalls but haven't looked back at the pictures.
Make a note of whether they are in National Parks too.

Apparently Horton Plains may be worth spending a bit of time at.

From speaking to Wade, these are some of the rivers we should look at doing.
They are ones that have been done before and are not so hardcore. Ones to plan to do to make sure we get enough water time if water levels mean are restricting exploration.
Kitugale (thier base is o the banks of this river)
Maha Valley - 3 days, 2 nights (maybe less if we blast it) - only grade 2, but will have some amazing experiences apaz (well, wild elephants and crocs...) It goes through a national park. Its in the NE.
Huna Falls Nr Bakers Falls at Worlds End.
Kokmoli
Seko Waka

Potential River List and Info. on them Empty Re: Potential River List and Info. on them

Post  Tom Thu Jul 07, 2011 1:34 am

Me and will spent the other day going over some of the maps (of which there are a lot) and came up with a few possibilities.
The majority of these are in the Horton plains, we just looked at rivers that had good access and a sensible gradient. Unfortunately the maps don't show national park areas but I guess we could work that out for google, the contours are every 100m aswell so its not all that easy to work out how steep the rivers really are, some may be a nice continuous gradient, others may fall 300m in 3 big falls, but we can just hope.
Will has the maps at the moment but I'm not sure if we will get the chance to meet up before we go to Norway to go through more. We are going to take them with us to Norway and spend the evening there going through them and picking out potentials. This will mean that we wont have the internet but i don't think that will be to much of a problem.
If your interested here are the rivers that look like they have potential with potential put ins, take outs, length and gradients.

I have some 1:63000 maps of most of the central mountains, but from the 1930s, again hard to make out contours and haven't fully studied it yet
A good site for visualising the terrain (maybe on google eart as well not sure) is on http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ and then click terrain
