Maps
I've found 2 map types on Stanfords that are 1:500K. Perfect for a general map.
http://www.stanfords.co.uk/stock/sri-lanka-179675/
This one is more up to date and better for roads, but you can't see the contours. It also doesn't show you the topography.
Though if you read the description it says the contours are there, just thinner lines that don't show up on the preview thumbnail.
http://www.stanfords.co.uk/series/world-wide-topographic-map-series-tpc/
This one is a Tactical Pilot Chart, so has less detail on roads etc, but does have the topography.
They're not expensive – we may as well just buy them both and split the costs?
I think it would be best to buy these now (someone who is doing the Logistical Planning) and worry about the smaller scale ones later?
We should also probably get a Lonely Planet. Will help with getting in touch with rafting companies, knowing where the nearest hospitals are etc. My sister possibly has one so will check this wkend and up date on that.

Re: Maps
This website has loads of maps of smaller scale. Perfect for more detail. Looking for escape routes / making sure we know egress points before waterfalls etc
They'd have to be posted from America though – I assume they're not digital ones.
On Dave's advice I have copied and pasted the ones we think would be most useful.
They are a 1:200K Soviet one
and some 1:100K ones covering all the provinces. This would be expensive, but once we know where we're heading we could be more selective with which ones we buy.
http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/int/srilanka.htm
Sri Lanka Provincial Topographic Maps. 1:100,000. Sri Lanka Survey Department, 1996-1997. These maps cover 7 of the 9 Sri Lankan provinces, as listed below. The maps have 100m contour interval, latitude/longitude and UTM coordinates along the margin.
65-33518-CE Central Province map set. 2 sheets. $14.99
65-33518-NC North-Central Province map set. 5 sheets. $29.99
65-33518-NW Northwestern Province map set. 4 sheets. $24.99
65-33518-SA Sagaragamuwa Province map set. 2 sheets. $14.99
65-33518-SO Southern Province map set. 3 sheets. $20.99
65-33518-UV Uva Province map set. 3 sheets. $20.99
65-33518-WP Western Province map set. 2 sheets. $14.99
Sri Lanka 1:200,000 Topographic Quadrangle Maps. 1:200,000. Soviet military
There are 10 sheets available, covering the southern 2/3 of Sri Lanka. These are available only as raster maps (both geo-referenced and non-georeferenced).
65-3353 Non-georeferenced rasters, specify sheet number $20.00
65-3353G Geo-referenced rasters, specify sheet number $29.95
On here are 2 potential scales of map:
http://www.cartographic.com/xq/asp/sri/lanka/topographic/maps/navmode.r/rid.241/tid.1/sid.0/cid.0/vid.0/oid.0/qx/hub/index.asp
1:250K are $19 for a digital copy. x4 of them needed for the whole of Sri Lanka
1:50K are $17 for a digital copy. Loads needed for the whole of Sri Lanka. Probably not needed.
Dave also sent me this link:
http://mapy.mk.cvut.cz/list/
Aparently there is a chance there'll be some Sri Lankan maps on here.
Neither of us have had time to go through it though.
...and neither of us speaks Russian..
I reckon there may be some within the 'India' folder, but they're only 1:250K

Re: Maps
I have the 1 to 50,000 rough guide on the way, and the latest edition of the rough guide to Sri Lanka (in my experience rough guides are far more comprehensive and detailed than lonely planet). When they arrive I will use them to select the more detailed maps we need, and I will send out some emails to tour companies (there will be a full directory in the rough guide) explaining what we are doing and asking for information and any help they may be able to offer.

Re: Maps
I ordered this map:
http://stanfords.co.uk/stock/india-sri-lanka-north-8-12-east-77-83-17748/
Which arrived the other day, however it only has the northern 1/3 of Sri Lanka, on which there is very little elevation.
However the map for the sothern 2/3 doesnt seem to be available, not from stanfords at least.
Will keep looking though.

Hey Tom. I guess the one you bought was the one Niamh tried to link to just above.I've found 2 map types on Stanfords that are 1:500K. Perfect for a general map.

& by now I guess Seth has his 1:500K map of the whole of Sri Lanka.
Niamh also linked to these ones.On here are 2 potential scales of map:

Does anyone have anyway of printing Digital Copies of Maps??
Danny Young sorted it for Tajijistan through Army contacts

65-33518-UV Uva Province map set. 3 sheets. $20.99
65-33518-WP Western Province map set. 2 sheets. $14.99
The most mountainous areas are in the provinces Uva ; Central ; Sagaragemuwa*
If we bought all these it would cost us $50 + P&P (not looked into this cost).
This may be worth looking into.
Then we'd have a 1:500K map of the whole of the country, and 1:100K of the areas we'll be based most.
*Edit:Having said this much of the Northern Central province is now opening up to tourists. It is this area that we are most likely to be exploring to try and 'extend tourism'. Could also be worth getting these??
See what the 1:500K maps say about its potential I guess.
